May Day Hike - Chippewa Forest

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Discover spring wildflowers on annual May Day hike

WALKER, Minn. (April 24, 2018) – Forest visitors are invited to join the Chippewa National Forest annual May Day hike at Stony Point Campground on Leech Lake, near Walker, Minn. This spring hike is scheduled for Tuesday, May 1, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Stony Point is known for early wildflowers and birding, but the delayed spring has turned this year’s hike to a phenology theme. The group will look for signs of the quickly changing season, including pelicans and gulls flying overhead and glimpses of hepatica and ostrich ferns in the woods.

May Day hikers will meet at the boat landing parking area next to the Stony Point Campground. Forest Service staff will have field guides and binoculars available and visitors are encouraged to bring their cameras. North winds are common off the big lake, so bring warm gear and mud boots for the one mile hike.

In case of bad weather, the event will be rescheduled for May 4 at 10 a.m. Stony Point Campground is located 13 miles northeast of Walker off Highway 200. Turn on County 13 and follow signs for the national forest campground. For more information, call the Walker Ranger District at 218-547-1044.
